‘State government should spare farmers from remitting crop insurance premium’

Farmers' unions in Tamil Nadu are requesting the state government to cover the farmers' portion of crop insurance premiums for the current season. The unions cite severe financial distress caused by previous crop failures and uncertainty regarding future harvests.

Farmers union affiliated to the Left parties have urged the State government to pay the insurance premium portion, to be remitted by farmers to avail crop insurance cover, in addition to its share of premium amount to be paid to the insurance cover providing companies during the current samba/thaladi season.
As per the crop insurance scheme, the premium after deducting a small portion of the premium to be paid by farmers, is equally borne by the Union and State governments.
