Starbucks is redesigning stores. What's changing?

Starbucks is undergoing a major store redesign across North America to create more welcoming, community-focused environments. The initiative includes adding comfortable seating, warmer aesthetics, and localized artwork as part of a broader strategy to improve customer experience.
Why it matters
This shift represents a strategic pivot away from standardized, high-efficiency store models toward experiential retail to combat declining performance.
Hear this story The vibes at Starbucks are changing, and the company says that's exactly the point.
Across the United States and Canada, Starbucks is redesigning its coffeehouses with softer seating, warmer interiors, locally inspired artwork and layouts meant to make stores feel more welcoming. Some locations are also getting smaller footprints, reflecting a broader rethink of what a Starbucks store should look and feel like.
The effort is part of Starbucks' ongoing "Back to Starbucks" turnaround strategy, which launched in 2024 to address operational challenges and reconnect the company with the coffeehouse experience that helped build its brand. Since late 2025, Starbucks says it has redesigned more than 1,000 stores in the United States and Canada and plans to reach at least 1,500 by the end of fiscal 2026.
