Why it matters
This case is significant for local political stability and the legal verification of election results in the region.
The petitioner challenging the election of Kalungu West MP Joseph Gozanga Ssewungu has closed his case, paving the way for the legislator to begin presenting his defence when the hearing resumes on October 23.
Ismail Ssemakula’s lawyers, led by Ambrose Tebyasa, told the High Court that they had closed their case after the cross-examination of the respondent’s witnesses before Justice Joyce Kavuma.
The petitioner presented three witnesses on Saturday, who were cross-examined. The session also addressed four witnesses the respondent had asked to present but who were not heard during the previous court session.
Mr Tebyasa said the petitioner had presented eight witnesses in total and that the last three had been cross-examined before the petitioner closed his case.
He said the petitioner’s legal team intended to cross-examine the returning officer, Teddy Nabukenya, and Mr Ssewungu when the respondent opens his case.
