MANILA, Philippines - Voters in Dasmari as City, Cavite headed to polling precincts on Saturday, August 29, to elect a new representative for the province's 4th District.
The special election is being held to replace former representative Francisco "Kiko" Barzaga, who was expelled from the House of Representatives in June over "disruptive" and "disorderly" behavior.
Five candidates are vying for the congressional post:
Regular voting hours began at 7 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m. Early voting for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and pregnant women, as well as persons deprived of liberty, started at 5 a.m.
August 29 was declared a special non-working day in Dasmari as City to allow registered voters to participate in the special election.
The House voted 265-14, with eight abstentions, on June 2 to expel Barzaga after adopting a committee report finding him guilty of "disruptive" and "disorderly" conduct that violated parliamentary rules.
