The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana is encouraging residents to install rooftop solar systems to lower electricity bills and support clean energy. The government is offering significant subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to make these installations more affordable.
Why it matters
Promoting solar energy adoption is a key component of India's strategy to transition toward renewable energy and reduce household utility costs.
The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) has suggested electricity consumers in the domestic category to install rooftop solar systems on their homes to reduce electricity bills and contribute to environmental protection.
Officials of the Southern Discom stated that the Centre was providing subsidy up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW rooftop solar system under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY). Increased adoption of solar energy would promote clean energy usage while providing consumers with an opportunity to reduce their electricity bills.
The officials explained that eligible domestic consumers could receive a maximum Central subsidy of ₹78,000 for installing a rooftop solar system with a capacity of 3 kWp at the rate of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kWp and ₹18,000 per kW for the additional 1 kWp. No additional subsidy would be given for capacity exceeding 3 kWp.
