Spain FIFA World Cup-winning midfielder wanted to replace Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool is reportedly considering Barcelona midfielder Gavi as a potential replacement for Alexis Mac Allister, whose contract expires in 2028. With Mac Allister's future uncertain and Gavi seeing reduced playing time at Barcelona, a transfer move is being speculated for the 2027 window.
Why it matters
This highlights the high-stakes nature of player contract management and transfer market strategies in elite European football.
Liverpool are coming to a crossroads regarding Alexis Mac Allister .
The 27-year-old Argentine is out of contract in 2028 and so far there are no signs of a new deal on the horizon. If things don't change dramatically in the next few months then the 2024/25 Premier League champions will be forced to reckon with a sale.
Mac Allister joined the Reds from Brighton back in 2023 for £35m and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.
Nonetheless decision-makers inside Anfield have been reluctant to come to terms over a new contract for the No10 - despite lavishing mammoth sums on deals for Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in recent months.
Without a breakthrough Andoni Iraola's side risk losing Mac Allister for nothing in 2028 - and may therefore consider an outbound deal either in January or summer 2027.
