SP attributes helmet awareness drives to decline in accidents
The Superintendent of Police in Sathya Sai district attributed a 30% decline in road accidents since January 2026 to increased helmet awareness and enforcement drives. Local officials and police are collaborating on safety initiatives to reduce fatalities, particularly among two-wheeler riders.
Why it matters
Effective road safety enforcement and public awareness campaigns are critical for reducing preventable traffic fatalities and improving public health outcomes.
Riding without a helmet causes severe head injuries and increases the risk of deaths, said Sathya Sai District Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar during the helmet awareness drive organised by the local leaders of Jana Sena Party (JSP) at the Government Junior College Ground in Kothacheruvu mandal headquarters on Thursday.
The SP was the chief guest at event themed “Wear a quality helmet and save your life” held to raise awareness about the importance of helmet use while driving.
Since January 2026, accidents have reduced by 30%, with 174 fewer cases, including 74 fatal and 100 non-fatal, mainly due to awareness and enforcement drives, the SP said. In 2025, as many as 555 accidents were recorded, including 234 fatal, of which 175 (75%) involved two-wheelers. A helmet must be viewed as a protection, not as a means to avoid fine, he added.
