Sowcar Janaki, a pioneering South Indian actress known for her versatility and long career, has died at the age of 94. She was a prominent figure in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada cinema, working with iconic stars and directors across several decades.

Sowcar Janaki was, until her demise , probably the oldest surviving South Indian actress, and was known for her versatile roles in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. The name ‘Sowcar’ became part of her name when she made her film debut in Shavukaru , a Telugu film directed by L.V. Prasad.
In Tamil, her entry began with the film Valayapathi , and she went on to be associated with some of the finest songs and roles, displaying style, finesse, majesty and a range of expressions. She even earned the title ‘weeping face’. But she preferred to call herself a feminist.
