South Africa's Transport Department places Mudzinganyama contracts under legal review after viral video threatening to shoot women

South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has placed all government contracts held by businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama under legal review. This follows his arrest for allegedly threatening to shoot women in a viral video, leading to multiple criminal charges.
Why it matters
The case highlights a growing government crackdown on gender-based violence by linking personal conduct to eligibility for state-funded business contracts.
South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says the department has placed contracts belonging to Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama under legal review.
Creecy says the viral video in which Mudzinganyama is threatening to shoot and kill a group of women in the powder room of the establishment, left her shocked.
In the video he also inferred that his wealth would protect him against any consequences.
Mudzinganyama appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, where the matter was postponed to the 15th of October.
After the video started making the rounds, he was arrested and appeared in court on Thursday.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) added several charges to the controversial businessman’s charge sheet.
