This highlights the vulnerability of public infrastructure to global software flaws and the importance of rapid cybersecurity response.
In a statement sent Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson said the sites were taken offline as a precautionary measure.
"Technical teams are assessing the technology environment and working with federal, provincial and territorial partners," the statement said. "Websites and services are being assessed individually to determine which can safely remain available."

Affected websites include those belonging to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, which displays the same message as the media release when people go to the homepage. Memorial University's website displays a message that says it's offline for "emergency maintenance."
The provincial government says disruptions are temporary and teams are working to restore services as quickly and safely as possible.
A key portal for accessing government services, MyGovNL, is not affected, the statement said.
