While Ujjain was already receiving large crowds during the month of Sawan — a holy month in the Hindu calendar — at least 10 lakh devotees thronged the city on Monday to visit the Nagchandreshwar temple for the Nag Panchami festival. The temple, located on the premises of the Mahakaleshwar shrine, opens only for 24 hours on Nag Panchami every year.
Reports and videos began to emerge around Monday noon from Ujjain, with claims of a brief stampede-like situation near the Harsidhi square due to rumours of electric current in some barricades erected for crowd management in the vicinity.
