Somaliland Names Sharmarke Gelle Ambassador to Ethiopia

Somaliland has appointed veteran government official and diplomat Sharmarke Ahmed Muhumed Gelle as its representative to Ethiopia, placing an experienced governance reformer at the centre of its engagement with a neighbour that remains critical to its political, economic and regional strategy.
Gelle’s appointment was announced on September 5 as part of a wider reshuffle by Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro. He previously headed Somaliland’s Civil Service Commission and served as the country’s deputy representative to Kenya. The reshuffle also named Mohamed Abdi Abdullahi Galool as deputy representative to Ethiopia.
The appointment comes as relations between Addis Ababa and Hargeisa remain closely tied to questions of maritime access, trade and regional diplomacy.
