A powerful solar eruption, described as a 'solar tsunami,' is expected to impact Earth around October 9–11, 2026. The event may trigger geomagnetic storms ranging from minor to strong, potentially affecting satellite operations and radio communications.
Why it matters
Space weather events can cause significant disruptions to global telecommunications, power grids, and satellite-based infrastructure.
Earth is preparing for a period of heightened space weather after a powerful solar eruption unleashed a massive wave of energy and charged particles into space. The event, described as a “solar tsunami”, could contribute to geomagnetic storms, brighter auroras and temporary disruptions to satellite operations and radio communications over the weekend of October 10–11, 2026.
According to India Today, forecasts indicate that up to three coronal mass ejections (CMEs) could interact with Earth’s magnetic field around October 9 and October 11. The anticipated disturbances range from G1, classified as minor, to G3, classified as strong, depending on the properties of the incoming solar material.
The latest solar activity began on October 8, when Sunspot 4549 produced an M6.7-class solar flare. The eruption generated a phenomenon known as a Moreton wave, often described as a solar tsunami.
