SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is reportedly planning a $50 billion investment in Malaysia focused on AI, data centers, and new technology. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that sites in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia have been identified for the expansion.
Why it matters
This investment highlights Malaysia's growing role as a regional hub for AI infrastructure and data centers in Southeast Asia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he had a videoconference with Son on Tuesday, during which the Japanese tech investor said he had picked regions in the Southeast Asian country for projects including data centres. SoftBank representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment outside normal business hours.
“He said he had chosen Sarawak — Kuching — and Peninsular Malaysia to expand investment in what would be among the largest investments in the region, worth US$50 billion,” Anwar said in a speech in Melaka on Saturday (Oct 24). “In what areas? Artificial intelligence, new technology and data centres.”
