Over the course of my career, I have been following the evolution of the mobile phone market and the smartphone industry. After 19 years of iterative designs with ever-so-slightly better features that did not really change much about the user experience, the category has entered one of the most interesting transformational phases.
In the past, the smartphone upgrade cycle revolved around marginal improvements that did not significantly affect the user experience, making the incentive to switch to a new version weaker each year. In contrast, today, smartphone manufacturers are exploring completely new directions.
