Smart PNG metering project to benefit Telangana

Telangana is set to benefit from a new partnership between the PNGRB and EESL to deploy smart domestic piped natural gas meters. The project aims to improve billing accuracy, safety, and operational efficiency through digital monitoring.
Why it matters
Smart metering technology is a key component of modernizing utility infrastructure and improving consumer protection in the energy sector.
Telangana is among the States set to benefit from the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Piped Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and EESL for the large-scale deployment of Smart Domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) meters across the country.
The initiative aims to modernise the gas distribution network through smart meters equipped with digital monitoring, leak detection, tamper alerts, remote operations and cybersecurity features. The technology is expected to improve consumer safety, billing accuracy and operational efficiency.
According to a statement released here, the partnership combines PNGRB’s regulatory support with EESL’s expertise in large-scale smart metering projects. Consumers will benefit from real-time gas consumption data, accurate billing and enhanced safety systems.
