Smart keeps mobile video crown as 5G devices jump 30%
Smart Communications has been recognized by Ookla for providing the best mobile video experience in the Philippines for the second consecutive year. The company attributes this to network investments and a 30% increase in 5G-capable devices.
Why it matters
This highlights the growing importance of network infrastructure in supporting data-heavy consumer habits like high-definition streaming.
Smart Communications Inc. kept its mobile video crown for a second year, an important test of network quality as millions more subscribers move to data-hungry 5G devices. The PLDT Inc. wireless unit now has 12.5 million 5G-capable individual devices on its network, up 30 percent and equivalent to 21 percent of its individual device base.
"Our latest recognition from Ookla affirms that our network investments are translating into meaningful improvements in customer experience, and I encourage everyone to see the difference by streaming with Smart," Smart officer-in-charge Lloyd R. Manaloto said.
The rapid migration to 5G gives Smart a bigger base of customers able to stream video and use other data-heavy services, putting more pressure on the network to keep pace.
