After a gap of eight years. the Department of Agriculture Marketing and Agri Business has resumed weekly auction of small onions at the onion marketing complex at Chettikulam in Alathur taluk in Perambalur district.
Perambalur is a major onion growing district in the State, with the crop being raised in about 6,500 hectares a year. Known for their pinkish hue, uniform size, and pungency, small onions grown in Chettikulam and neighbouring villages in the district were recognised for their unique identity with the grant of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2025.
