Six bars, pubs accused of serving liquor to underage persons in Manipal

On the directions of Udupi Superintendent of Police (SP) Hariram Shankar, several police teams conducted raids on six bars and pubs under the jurisdiction of the Manipal Police Station on Sunday, following allegations that students were being allowed to smoke hookah and that persons below the age of 21 were being served liquor.
In a press note, Mr. Shankar said some establishments were accused of providing hookah to students in violation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). They were also accused of serving liquor to persons below the age of 21, in violation of Rule 10(1)(e) of the Karnataka Excise Licence Rules (Licence Conditions) and Section 36(1)(b) of the Karnataka Excise Act.
