APCC president Y.S. Sharmila was placed under house arrest while attempting to lead a protest against alleged irregularities in the voter revision process. She accused the Election Commission of bias and called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing political tensions regarding electoral integrity and the democratic rights of opposition leaders in India.
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila on Saturday accused the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of undermining democracy through alleged wrongful deletion of voters’ names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
She was placed under house arrest at her residence in Gannavaram and was prevented by the police from leaving to participate in her party’s ‘Chalo Lok Bhavan’ protest, which called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Subsequently, Ms. Sharmila staged a dharna by squatting on the road.
“Modi means ‘Murderer of Democratic India’,” she said, criticising the alleged irregularities in the voter revision process.
