SIR: Bengaluru accounts for over half of the pending hearings
Bengaluru is currently managing over 3.7 lakh pending election-related notices as part of the Special Intensive Revision process. Election officials are deploying Booth Level Officers to collect documents and finalize voter rolls by October 22.
Why it matters
Efficient voter roll management is critical for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of democratic electoral processes in India's major urban centers.
With hearings on notices issued under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) scheduled to conclude by October 12, more than 3.70 lakh of the 6.66 lakh notices pending for hearing are in Bengaluru, Shilpa Nag C.T., Special Commissioner (Election), said while addressing the media on Tuesday.
Of the more than 24 lakh notices issued in Bengaluru over logical discrepancies and no mapping, only 13,550 notices are yet to be delivered. Following recent directions from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit houses and collect the required documents, while hearings will be conducted online only in some cases.
Ms. Nag said 1,117 Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) have been appointed to conduct hearings, in addition to the 76 regular AEROs.
Meanwhile, as of October 6, the GBA had received a total of 5,42,893 forms, of which 3,89,698 are yet to be processed.
