In a shocking incident, a habitual offender, wanted in many grave crimes, allegedly attacked a sub-inspector of police with a sharp weapon and in retaliation, the officer opened fire from his service pistol in which the anti-social suffered injuries below his knee on Wednesday.
The habitual offender, Raja alias Chikkanampatti Raja (57), from Chinnalapatti in Dindigul district figured in 22 crimes, including waylaying, attempt to murder, robbery and murder.
In a murder case, a court had directed life sentence to Raja on April 5, 2025. Having appealed with the higher court on the order, Raja obtained a bail recently and was underground since then.
When the police came to know that Raja was reportedly threatening some of the witnesses, who had deposed in the murder case, they began to search for him, but in vain.
