SHRC recommends appointment of S. S. Lal as Special Rapporteur to study problems in health sector
The State Human Rights Commission has recommended appointing public health expert S. S. Lal as a Special Rapporteur to address crises in the public health sector. The move follows concerns over infrastructure gaps and the rising dominance of private healthcare.

Retired Judge Alexander Thomas, chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), has directed the government to appoint public health expert S. S. Lal as Special Rapporteur-cum-Special Monitor to study the serious problems prevailing in the public health sector and to recommend solutions.
The commission expressed hope that Dr. Lal, who has gained international recognition working as a consultant with the World Health Organisation, would be able to study with the various challenges facing the State’s health sector with a long-term vision and give suitable advice to the government
The SHRC’s recommendation came, after it registered a suo motu case, in the context of serious crises facing the public health sector, including the lack of basic infrastructure.
