Shops, hotels in Yercaud should regulate themselves on using plastic products, says Collector
Salem District Collector K. Elambahavath has called for shops and hotels in Yercaud to self-regulate by replacing plastic bottles with glass or metal alternatives. The initiative is part of a broader environmental campaign to protect the tourist destination.
Why it matters
Local government initiatives to reduce single-use plastics are critical for preserving ecological health in popular tourist areas.
Salem District Collector K. Elambahavath said the shops, hotels and resorts in Yercaud should use glass or metal bottles instead of plastic bottles. Trader associations should self-regulate themselves in this regard.
The Tamil Nadu government is carrying out various activities to make the public aware of the ill effects caused by plastic products and to control the use of plastic.
Such awareness programmes were held from September 11 to 20 at 120 places in Yercaud panchayat union areas under the theme ‘Yecaud Nam Uyir Kadu’ to spread awareness among the public on the environmental harm caused by the use of plastic products, to avoid the use of plastic products and to protect the environment.
Following this, the Rotary Club of Salem City and the Yercaud Hotel Owners Association took a special environmental initiative named ‘Pasumai Yercaud’ with the aim of making Yercaud greener, cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
