Ratnakumari S., in-charge headmistress at the Government Higher Primary School in Samatagaru village of Hosanagara taluk, Shivamogga, has won the National Teachers’ Award for 2026. She is one of 48 teachers to win the award across the country this year, and the only one from Karnataka.

Ms. Ratnakumari, who has over 30 years of teaching experience, is known for adopting innovative techniques to make teaching effective. She believes in engaging schoolchildren through activities on campus.

Speaking to The Hindu, on Saturday (August 22, 2026), Ms. Ratnakumari said she was happy to have been chosen for the national award, and credited the recognition to her team’s work. “I believe I have been chosen for the award recognising the work done by our team, with the support of parents, villagers, and officers of the department. Without all of them, we could not have done anything,” she said.
