Shels win FAI Cup to shatter Athlone's double dreams

Shelbourne produced a brilliantly efficient performance to win the Club Orange Women's FAI Cup and shatter Athlone Town's dreams of doing the double-double.

Athlone were crowned league champions last night after Galway United were beaten by Wexford. But they were picked apart by their old rivals at Tallaght Stadium.

Shels were outstanding in the opening period, plundering three goals through the eye-catching Halle Harcourt, Alex Kavanagh and Maeve Wollmer.

There was no way back for Athlone, Hannah Waesch's fine strike just too little too late, though they did have their chances, and will curse poor finishing and the excellence of keeper Mya Sanchez when they reflect on this decider.

Conditions were good in Tallaght: a light breeze, mild temperatures and autumn sunshine.
