The South African Sharks defeated Munster 15-3 in a rainy match at Thomond Park. Despite early pressure from the hosts, the Sharks secured a rare win on Irish soil through tries from Gianni Lombard and Ivan van Zyl.
Why it matters
This result impacts the standings in the regular season and highlights the competitive nature of international club rugby.
South African franchise the Sharks made it four wins on the bounce against Munster, as they defeated Clayton McMillan's men 3-15 on a wet and windy Saturday night in Thomond Park.
Tries from Gianni Lombard and Ivan van Zyl were enough for JP Pietersen’s men to pull off a rare win on Irish soil, and compound the hosts to their third defeat in the first six weeks of the regular season.
Munster dominated the early exchanges but to little avail. Early Sharks ill-discipline gave the hosts a lineout deep inside the South Africans 22, but Alex Nankivell knocked the ball on with the tryline beckoning.
A minute’s applause for the late, great Anthony Foley soon followed before the Sharks got their first chance to attack, eventually getting the game’s opening score.
