Why it matters
This incident highlights a significant public safety event in a local community, prompting immediate police intervention and road closures.
A man and a woman have been found dead after a shotgun was stolen from a store in Nelson.
The theft in the industrial suburb of Annesbrook was reported just before noon, Acting Tasman District Commander Superintendent Blair Macdonald said.
The offender left in a vehicle before police arrived. A short time later, they were alerted to a firearms incident on nearby Parkers Rd.
When they arrived, a man and a woman were found dead.
“Initial inquiries suggest the two deceased were known to each other ... I can reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to public safety,” Macdonald said.
Police were providing “support to their loved ones” and investigating what had occurred.
As part of their inquiries, police were also at a property on Sanctuary Drive, Stoke.
