Sengkang West LRT line resumes full service on Oct 4
The Sengkang West LRT line in Singapore will resume full service on October 4, two weeks ahead of schedule following depot upgrades. The expansion aims to accommodate a larger fleet to support the growing population in the north-eastern region.
Why it matters
Infrastructure upgrades are critical for managing urban density and public transport efficiency in rapidly growing metropolitan areas.
The Sengkang-Punggol LRT depot (above) is being upgraded to support a larger LRT fleet needed to cater to the growing number of commuters.
Listen SINGAPORE – Full train service on the Sengkang West LRT line will resume two weeks ahead of schedule on Oct 4, six months after the inner loop was closed for upgrades to the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) depot.
Originally spanning 3.5ha, which is about the size of five football fields, the depot has been undergoing expansion works since 2022.
Once it is completed in 2027, it will span 11.1ha and provide the space needed to house a larger fleet of light rail vehicles to meet growing ridership demand.
To manage demand until then, a free off-peak ride scheme that has been in place for commuters in the north-eastern part of Singapore will be extended to Dec 26, 2027.
