The May Lee State Office Complex in Sacramento was one of multiple sites where state workers were striking. The union SEIU Local 1000 is leading the strike, fighting the state over a new contract. The union is seeking a 20% pay raise over three years, along with reductions in healthcare costs and changes to telework policies. The largest demonstration took place at noon outside of Cal HR. Thousands of state workers then marched to the capital annex. "This is them saying prioritize state workers, respect us, pay us and protect us for the work that we do," said Anica Walls, president of SEIU Local 1000. SEIU last authorized a strike in 2016, but the two parties came to an agreement before any workers hit the picket lines.
