Security Council Programme of Work for November 2026

Latvia has assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for November 2026, prioritizing a debate on emerging technologies and security. The council is also preparing for ICJ elections and mandate renewals for peacekeeping missions in Sudan and the Central African Republic.
Why it matters
The Security Council's agenda dictates the international response to ongoing conflicts and sets the tone for global diplomatic priorities.
Latvia is the president of the Security Council in November. Council members adopted the provisional programme of work for the month earlier today (2 November).
Latvia has chosen to organise one signature event during its presidency, a high-level open debate on emerging technologies and security under the “Maintenance of international peace and security” agenda item. Secretary-General António Guterres and a civil society representative are the anticipated briefers.
Latvia also intends to convene an additional high-level briefing during the month, but the topic had not been confirmed at the time of writing.
Tomorrow (3 November), the Security Council and the General Assembly will hold simultaneous, separate elections for the International Court of Justice (ICJ). There are nine candidates running for the five available seats.
Several African issues are on the programme this month.
