Share A A A A $6 billion plan to untangle the City Loop with new tunnels has been explored by Victoria’s Transport Department, which has mapped out early concepts for a project that would transform the heart of Melbourne’s rail network.
An unpublished video produced by the Department of Transport and Planning and obtained by this masthead highlights how the existing rail circuit under Melbourne’s CBD is no longer fit for purpose and outlines a proposal to fix it called the City Loop Reconfiguration.
“The Melbourne City Loop was designed in the 1960s for a very different city,” the video says. “The focus was people travelling from the suburbs to the CBD to get to work in the morning and home again in the evening.
