Screened 21.81 lakh books, withdrew 4,812 from college libraries since July: J&K Govt.

Around 21.81 lakh books were screened, and 4,812 books withdrawn from government and private college libraries in the Union Territory this year, the Jammu and Kashmir government told the Assembly on Tuesday (September 22, 2026).

The government informed the House that 21.81 lakh books had been screened in college libraries since July, including 12.48 lakh books in the Kashmir division and 9.32 lakh in the Jammu division. It said 4,812 books, including 518 banned books and 4,249 non-banned books, were withdrawn from the colleges. At least 1,752 books had been referred to the Director, Colleges, for expert examination, the government said.
