Scholarship funds were used to sponsor spouses, children’s travel - Zita Benson

Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sabah Zita Benson, has alleged widespread mismanagement in the administration of scholarship funds under the previous government, claiming that excessive spending on dependants of scholarship beneficiaries contributed to the accumulation of outstanding arrears owed to Ghanaian students studying in the UK.

In a series of posts on Facebook, Ms. Benson cited what she described as instances of "reckless" expenditure under the scholarship scheme, including payments for spouses and children accompanying beneficiaries abroad by the previous administration.

According to her, in one case, a scholarship beneficiary's spouse and three children each received 8,160 to accompany the student to the UK, in addition to the scholarship awarded to the principal beneficiary. She also claimed that the family's airfare alone amounted to GH 90,000.
