Scarab beetle found on Pulau Ubin new to science
A new species of scarab beetle, Anomala sp. aff. matricula, and a new spider species, Piranthus kohi, have been discovered on Singapore's Pulau Ubin, alongside 27 other species new to Singapore. These findings, documented in a new NParks publication, highlight the island's rich and previously underestimated biodiversity.
Why it matters
The discovery of new species underscores the importance of biodiversity conservation, even in urbanized areas, and provides valuable scientific data on ecosystems. It also challenges perceptions about Singapore's natural heritage, emphasizing the need for continued ecological research and protection.
The Anomala sp. aff. matricula was uncovered during a survey of Pulau Ubin between 2018 and 2021.
The article presents scientific findings and conservation efforts without any political, economic, or social bias, focusing purely on the biological discoveries and their implications for biodiversity.
