SC/ST Commission writes to DGP, seeks probe into alleged attack on BRS legislators
The Telangana SC/ST Commission has requested a formal probe into allegations that BRS legislators were attacked during a protest at the Assembly. The Commission has demanded a report and evidence from the police within 48 hours.
Why it matters
Allegations of violence against elected officials, particularly those from marginalized communities, raise significant concerns regarding democratic safety and institutional accountability.
The Telangana State Commission for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) sought a detailed probe into an alleged attack and inappropriate conduct against Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators belonging to the SC and ST communities during a protest at the Assembly on Monday.
Following a complaint filed by BRS SC/ST MLAs, including Kova Laxmi, regarding the alleged incident, Commission chairman K. Venkataiah wrote to the Director General of Police (DGP), seeking a detailed and comprehensive inquiry report within 48 hours and action against those responsible.
Mr. Venkataiah requested the police to furnish the findings, an action-taken report, and supporting evidence, including CCTV footage, to enable the Commission to take further action in accordance with its mandate.
