Savarkar quiz row: Minister says teacher was suspended based on probe report

A teacher was suspended following an inquiry into a controversial question about V.D. Savarkar included in an unofficial Independence Day quiz. The Education Minister stated that the teacher acted outside of prescribed rules and warned that further investigations into senior officials may follow.
Why it matters
This reflects the ongoing political sensitivity surrounding historical figures in Indian education and the government's efforts to maintain control over curriculum content.
The teacher who reportedly included a controversial question about V.D. Savarkar in an Independence Day quiz was suspended on the basis of the inquiry report, General Education Minister V. Shamsudheen said here on Monday (August 10).
The inquiry report submitted to the government found that the teacher who prepared the question had erred, the Minister said. He added that further investigation would be conducted into the incident.
The Independence Day quiz was not a programme included in the official education calendar, Mr. Shamsudheen said, stressing that teachers were required to strictly follow prescribed rules.
Responding to criticism that action had been taken only against the teacher, the Minister said strict action would be taken against senior officials if the enquiry found that they had committed lapses. “Anyone found responsible will face action, irrespective of how high their position is,” he said.
