The South African Police Service (SAPS) 10111 emergency command centre number has been down in Cape Town since 16:00 on Tuesday, with backup phones reportedly being used by call operators until further notice.
Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi confirmed that Telkom and the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) were working to restore the 10111 emergency lines at the Maitland command centre.
“Telkom and SITA technicians are at the Maitland command centre right now, trying to restore the lines. It looks like the network is an issue onsite on that side,” Dyantyi told News24.
Asked when the emergency number would be operational again, Dyantyi said he could not provide a timeline.
