Sanitary workers staged a protest by besieging Sivaganga Municipal Office on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), demanding regularisation of those working under the outsourcing system.
There are 60 permanent sanitary workers and 74 outsourced sanitary workers in the municipality. Pressing for the regularisation of outsourced workers, members of the Municipal, Rural Development and Local Body Workers Union, affiliated to the CITU, have been on an indefinite strike since Monday.
On Tuesday, they staged a protest by besieging the municipal office. speaking to reporters, State vice-president of the union Veeraiya said, “Outsourced sanitary workers in Sivaganga Municipalilty must be paid the daily wage of ₹622 fixed by the District Collector. However, the private company outsourcing workers is paying them only ₹350.”
