Why it matters
Human interest stories involving celebrity connections often gain significant traction in regional sports and entertainment media.
MANILA, Philippines - Red lions are wildcats after all.
Young basketball player Kai Efron of San Beda University shares more than a name with actor Zac Efron - they're distantly related by blood.
In an interview with All-Star Magazine , Kai confirmed he was cousins with Zac as their grandfathers were brothers. This makes Kai and Zac second cousins.
Zac rose to fame leading "High School Musical" as Troy Bolton, team captain and point guard of the fictional East High Wildcats basketball team.
"I don't think he's the very best basketball player, though. I think he should just stick to acting," Kai joked about Zac. "He knows he should just keep that to himself. There's nothing to share. It was bad. Bad basketball from him."
