The new champ dethroned CM Punk on Friday's special episode of SmackDown beamed from Mexico City. SmackDown GM Nick Aldis had given Punk's main event plans the green light on last week's show . There, Punk said he was sick of Sami being a persistent pest, so he wanted him inside the ring in the main event on 11 September.
Kevin Owens, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae all got involved in a wild finish that saw Zayn end the night holding WWE's top prize aloft. Sami was actually tapping out to a Punk submission when LeRae distracted the ref and Gargano tried to interfere on Zayn's behalf. That backfired, and 'Johnny Wrestling' ate a GTS for his troubles.
