Sam Altman's OpenAI to Apple on 'theft' charges: You are getting it all wrong
OpenAI has publicly pushed back against Apple's trade secrets lawsuit, claiming the legal action is based on factual errors and unnecessary injunction requests. Apple alleges that OpenAI improperly acquired confidential information through former Apple employees.
Why it matters
This legal battle underscores the intense competition for talent and intellectual property in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
OpenAI has stopped answering Apple's trade secrets lawsuit in one-line statements. On Monday, the company published a public letter titled "Apple is getting this wrong," posted within hours of Apple walking into a California federal court to ask for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI and two former Apple employees now on its payroll. The tone was not lawyerly. It was personal. The letter's central argument is that Apple's timeline does not survive contact with the paperwork. OpenAI says Apple's outside counsel at Weil, Gotshal & Manges emailed the wrong person in February after confusing two similar Asian last names, then claimed a phone conversation with OpenAI general counsel Che Chang that never happened.
