China has rejected calls from top American technology executives to pump the brakes on artificial intelligence (AI) development, calling the warnings ‘fear mongering’ and urging the global community to stop it and stirring confrontation. The pushback follows a widely circulated essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who urged development labs to moderate the pace of cutting-edge AI breakthroughs because security guardrails are struggling to keep up. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk both backed Amodei’s stance.Speaking at a press conference on Monday (September 14), Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun countered the narrative that Chinese advances in computing pose a threat to American national security. Guo emphasised that global development must remain open, inclusive, ethical and universally beneficial.
