Sally Rooney books: Faber to end supply in the UK

Publisher Faber has ceased supplying Sally Rooney's books in the UK because current legislation prevents them from passing earnings to the author due to her support for Palestine Action. The group was proscribed as a terrorist organization in the UK in 2025, and both the publisher and author have agreed to the cessation of supply.
Why it matters
This case illustrates the intersection of international political activism, anti-terrorism legislation, and the publishing industry's legal obligations.
Faber has confirmed it will stop supplying Sally Rooney's books in the UK, but says copies already held by retailers will not be removed from sale.
The publisher has clarified the position to RTÉ after announcing that UK legislation meant it could no longer pass on earnings from sales to the Irish author because of her support for the banned group Palestine Action.
"Stock will not be removed," Faber told RTÉ in response to a query about copies currently on sale in UK bookshops.
In an earlier statement, the publisher said: "Current legislation in the UK has led to circumstances where Faber cannot pass on UK earnings to Sally Rooney for her work.
"To sell a writer's work and not be able to pass on earnings is an unconscionable situation for a publisher.
