Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran reported an attempted attack by fellow DMK councillors during a meeting at his office. The incident followed internal party disagreements regarding privatization projects and the Mayor's communication with party leadership.
Why it matters
Internal political friction within a ruling party can disrupt local governance and public service delivery in municipal corporations.
Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran has claimed that a few Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillors tried to attack him on Thursday (October 8, 2026).
On Thursday afternoon, 27 DMK councillors met the Mayor in his chamber at the Corporation’s office. At that time, a verbal duel broke out between the DMK councillors. Information spread that DMK councillors attacked each other and some tried to attack the Mayor as well. At first, the councillors denied the incident. Later, the mayor confirmed the event.
Speaking to The Hindu, the Mayor said, “Last month, a few councillors led by me met DMK president M.K. Stalin regarding the privatisation of the drinking water supply and the proposed waste-to-energy project in Salem Corporation,”. The DMK councillors also staged a protest in the Corporation last month.
