SADC Summit calls for regional electric mobility action
The SADC Summit in Durban has reinforced calls for regional implementation of the African Union’s Continental Framework on Electric Mobility. Stakeholders argue that leveraging South Africa's automotive industry and the region's vast critical mineral reserves could transform the local economy.

South Africa’s assumption of the Southern African Development Community chairmanship has strengthened calls for the region to implement the African Union’s Continental Framework on Electric Mobility.
The 46th SADC Summit, held recently in Durban, focused on industrialisation, infrastructure development and the transformation of the region’s critical mineral resources.
The Electric Mission, a Johannesburg based non profit organisation focused on mobility and the energy transition, says the summit’s outcomes provide a political mandate to turn the continental electric mobility framework into a regional development programme.
The organisation believes South Africa’s automotive industry offers the most practical platform for developing electric vehicle manufacturing, battery production and associated component supply chains across SADC.
