Why it matters
This case highlights the international reach of organized crime networks and the complex legal challenges involved in cross-border extradition for violent crimes.
Atna Ohna, identified in court documents as a hitman for Wedding's purported drug-smuggling network, briefly appeared in Quebec Superior Court in Montreal on Wednesday, before the hearing was postponed. A judge agreed to impose a publication ban on the identities his would-be sureties.
U.S. federal prosecutors want Ohna extradited to stand trial in Los Angeles on conspiracy charges related to murder, drug trafficking and witness tampering.
Montreal police have described Ohna as one of the city's most prominent organized crime figures. He's being held at Quebec's Roberval jail, 350 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
According to Canadian court documents, Ohna made multiple efforts to help locate the target of Wedding's purported murder plot. One such attempt included enlisting the assistance of an acquaintance and telling her Wedding would pay for a "Brazilian butt lift" and breast augmentation surgery.
