Rugby: Canterbury beat Otago to claim the Ranfurly Shield

Canterbury defeated Otago 19-15 to reclaim the Ranfurly Shield in a physically demanding rugby match. Despite being reduced to 13 men during the second half, Canterbury maintained their lead to secure the victory.
Why it matters
The Ranfurly Shield is a prestigious trophy in New Zealand rugby, and its change in possession is a significant event in the domestic sporting calendar.
The Ranfurly Shield is returning to Canterbury.
In a battle of pace, collisions and physicality, the team in red and black hoops triumphed over Otago, with a 19-15 win in Dunedin.
Canterbury were led by a double to hooker Brodie McAlister, twice getting over the line behind a rumbling lineout drive; the set piece causing Otago plenty of problems in attacking territory.
McAlister found himself in the unusual situation of being sent off for a head injury assessment in the second half due to a collision with referee Ben O’Keeffe. The situation became stranger still as McAlister’s replacement, Manumaua Letiu, was sent to the sin bin after repeating infringements from his side.
It left Canterbury down to 13 on the field and with no available hookers for about five minutes, so the sides had uncontestable scrums before McAlister was cleared to return in the 60th minute.
