RTÉ Sport unhappy with Ger Gilroy appointment, cttee told

RTÉ's sports department expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of broadcaster Ger Gilroy due to his past critical comments about the organization. The broadcaster defended its recruitment process, stating that Gilroy was selected based on merit after an internal and external search.
Why it matters
The controversy highlights internal tensions within public service media regarding recruitment transparency and the balance between editorial independence and institutional loyalty.
An Oireachtas committee has heard that the RTÉ sports department were "actually not happy" with the appointment of broadcaster Ger Gilroy because of comments he made about RTÉ Sport in the past.
RTÉ was before the Oireachtas Committee on Media following the Government's decision to withhold funding from it.
The broadcaster also defended its recruitment process in Mr Gilroy's appointment, and rejected assertions by TD and Senators that he had been "head-hunted".
Director of Audio Patricia Monahan said there was an internal expression of interest process.
She said that external candidates were identified and went through a similar process.
"There's a process that we undertake with all expressions of interest, and there is a point in all of those processes, we'll consider other candidates, and that's what happens in this case," Ms Monahan said.
