Road safety audit ordered on Kudamurutti–Pettavaithalai section of Karur highway

Local authorities in Tiruchi have ordered a road safety audit for the Tiruchi-Karur Highway following reports of accidents and traffic hazards. Officials are tasked with proposing solutions such as central medians, speed breakers, and designated parking for heavy vehicles.
Why it matters
Infrastructure safety audits are essential for reducing traffic-related fatalities in rapidly developing regions with mixed-use road traffic.
Collector Pratik Tayal has directed officials of the Transport, Police, Highways and Revenue departments to conduct a joint inspection of the Kudamurutti–Pettavaithalai section of the Tiruchi-Karur Highway and initiate immediate measures to address road safety concerns along the stretch.
The direction follows a request from Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko, based on petitions from residents highlighting several accident risks on the highway, including roadside encroachments, temporary shops and eateries, heavy vehicles parked along the road and narrowing of the carriageway at certain locations.
The officials have been asked to conduct a field inspection and submit a report within three days, detailing the immediate and permanent measures proposed to address the identified safety concerns.
Particular attention has been sought in Kambarasampettai, Kadiyakurichi and Jeeyapuram, where the lack of adequate parking and resting facilities for heavy vehicles has resulted in vehicles being parked along the roadside, increasing the risk of accidents.
